Interview with Joeski

Ahead of Joeski's triumphant return to Auckland, Friday the 27th of July here, Cam put together a bunch of questions to get to know our friend a little better. Joeski has been in the game for three decades now, with a long list of releases on such labels as Defected Records, Crosstown Rebels, Pokerflat Recordings, Hot Creations, Nervous Records & Knee Deep in Sound to name a few. Not only this but Joeski has managed to stay arguably one of the most relevant acts over this time period, in the house music industry.

Q: You've toured NZ three times already over the years, this will be your fourth visit to our shores. What’s something you love about visiting NZ, or you've always wanted to do/see while here?

A: I love the vibe of the people – it’s always been a great connection with the crowd. I’ve never been to the beaches there and would love to.

Q: Who was your biggest influence that got you in to music production?

A: Global Communication & Mood II Swing were big influences for me. I played a lot of their records back in the day.

Q: Who is your favourite DJ of all time and what about them do you most admire?

A: The Wicked Crew from San Francisco always killed it in the late 90s/early 2000s. I have some great memories from parties out there.

Q: Where do you see "house music" in the next 10 years?

A: I feel like there is a strong return to disco happening and house music will be big once again.

Q: What was the biggest turning point of your career?

A: When I had my first big record “Hold On To Your Love” – I started touring the world and haven’t stopped since.

Q: What advice would you give to an up and coming inspiring DJ / artist?

A: Be consistent and work hard. Work ethic is super important.

Q: What special tactics do you draw inspiration from that you believe help you achieve your own sound/s?

A: I get inspiration from everywhere – sometimes I will be watching a movie and have an idea and jump into the studio to get that idea out.

Q: Over the years of touring and performing abroad, can you share with us one standout and interesting moment?

A: Galen and Solar from San Francisco do the Sunset parties and there was one event where all elements were perfect. That perfect alignment of the vibe, setting, performers was so vivid and will always stand out.

Q. What is one of the highlights away from the music when touring around the world?

A: Getting all the beautiful sites – I went to Machu Picchu last month and what a magical place. I feel so fortunate to do what I love and see all these different places.

Q. What are a few of your favourite house/techno tunes either current or of the past decade?

A. Harry Romero - My Beautiful House – Bambossa, David Herrero - Shamefa - Maya Recordings, &ME - Trilogy feat Sabota – Keinmusik

Q: What is your hometown and favourite thing about it?

A: Brooklyn, NY – the art that you see everywhere you go – whether it’s visual, graffiti, music or dancers.

Q: What does the future hold for Joeski?

A: I’m working on a new album. The concept for the album is to record musicians around the world and will have all genres of electronic music from down tempo to vocal house to techno – the full spectrum.
